A long as the overall effect isn’t too jarring on the eyes you can get away with a lot.  If you are concerned by the colours you want to use consult a professional graphic designer.  The main consideration is the contrast between colours so the website is readable.  Please bear in mind that whatever colours look like on your screen - they will appear differently on almost everyone else’s so don't get too hung up on that!
